> In the fourth: In the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya, accepting an invitation constitutes a duṣkṛta offense, which is spoken for the moment regarding begging for food; the other eleven are likewise violations. According to the Vimuttimagga: For rag robes, receiving robes given by householders is immediate loss; for having only three robes, storing extra robes is immediate loss; for begging for food, accepting an invitation is immediate loss (as above); not having the ritual of leftover food, if one does perform it, it is termed a loss; for eating in a single sitting, eating again is a loss (these two are absent in the treatise, but explained according to the principle); for the araṇya, dwelling in a settlement is immediate loss; for charnel grounds, sitting in other, superior places is immediate loss; for under trees, dwelling in houses is immediate loss; for the open air, covered places are immediate loss; for sitting wherever one finds oneself, sitting in places of attachment and delight is immediate loss; for always sitting, lying down to sleep is immediate loss; violating them without relinquishing them uniformly constitutes a duṣkṛta. For one unable to maintain them and wishing to relinquish, one should say: "From this day forward, I relinquish begging for food," and so forth. Thus it is known that these twelve practices must all be received and practiced by formal karmavācanā; if unable, one must relinquish them; if not received, they are not accomplished; if not relinquished, one should know that violating them constitutes an offense.
