> In the next section, in the \*Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya\*, first it clarifies the method of taking off and putting on \[the robes\]; from 'Accordingly' onward, second, it clarifies the cords and fasteners; from 'Draping' onward, third, it clarifies neatness and orderliness. The first text also has two parts: first it explains the method of wearing the three robes, and afterward it explains the undergarments. In the first, the first three lines summarize the three robes. It explains that a bhikṣu keeps two sets of the three robes: one set worn when entering villages (namely the newly maintained, fine ones), and one set worn inside the monastery (the old, long-held robes). Thus, each of the three robes has a village robe and a park robe. From 'Must not' onward, it specifically indicates the great robe: first it explains the method of taking off the old and putting on the new when entering a village. The 'park robe' is the great robe worn inside the monastery. (Saṅghārāma translates as 'community park', a general designation for monasteries, derived originally from Sudatta's purchase of the park.) 'Beside oneself' (自近): \*zi\* (自) still means 'at' or 'by'. From 'From' onward, next it explains the method of taking off the new and putting on the old when leaving a village. This comes from its thirty-fifth fascicle. After it explains the great robe in full, the remaining two robes are understood likewise, so the text is abbreviated. The noted words dispel doubt, fearing that one might take the park robe to be the five-strip robe. (Ancient commentaries erroneously interpreted it as the five-strip robe, or said that the note should be moved below 'village robe', or said that \*li\* was mistakenly written for \*lan\* to explain the word 'park' above; such erroneous theories all arise from not examining the root text.) In the subsequent undergarments section, the two matters of going out and entering are also the same as explained above. Within the text, first it prevents non-dharmic practices. In the earlier regulation on going out and entering: first seek, then take off; in the later regulation on double wearing: pulling and drawing out. From 'Should' onward, it shows what is dharmic. (Ancient writers did not explain this, hence it is carefully detailed here.) The 'loose strap and loop' resembles a hook and fastener that is not attached to the robe; it is not yet clear how they were used in the Western lands.
