> If, prior to making the formal announcement, one says that the Saṃgha has partiality, anger, fear, or delusion; or if one does not read a letter and takes it along; or if one serves as a messenger for a householder—in all such cases it is a duṣkṛta. The offenses for bhikṣuṇīs are the same as for the Saṃgha \[of bhikṣus\]. There is no offense: if one desists at the initial speaking; in cases of unlawful reproval and admonition; if, having obtained robes and food, one gives them to one's father and mother, to a sick person, to a young child, to a pregnant woman, to a person bound in prison, or to hired laborers within the monastery; if one plants flowers and fruit trees, takes flowers oneself or teaches others to string flowers in order to present them as offerings to the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṃgha—in all such cases there is no offense. If someone wishes to strike him, or in a perilous place frightening with bandits, tigers, or wolves, or if someone comes carrying thorns, and he flees and takes shelter therein—there is no offense. If, when crossing a river, ditch, canal, or pit, one leaps across—there is no offense. If a companion is behind, and on looking back one does not see him and whistles or calls out—there is no offense. If on behalf of one's father and mother, on behalf of a sick person, or on behalf of someone bound and locked in prison; if a devoted upāsaka is ill or in prison, and one reads a letter and carries it to him; if for the affairs of a stūpa, the Saṃgha, or a sick bhikṣu, one carries a letter back and forth—in such cases there is no offense.
