> The Buddha was in the country of Vaiśālī. At that time, Sudinna, son of \[Kalandaka\], left the household life with faith. Later, he returned to his original village and engaged in impurity with his former wife. The bhikṣus came to know of it and said: 'In the pure Dharma of the Tathāgata, one should be without desire regarding desires, able to sever craving, destroy the lair, eliminate all fetters, and attain nirvāṇa with desire extinguished. Why then have you done such an evil deed?' They reported his transgression to the Buddha. The Buddha immediately assembled the saṃgha. Knowing the time and purpose to be suitable, and having taken \[Sudinna's\] own confession, the Buddha rebuked him, saying: 'What you have done is wrong; it is not deportment, not that of a śramaṇa, not pure conduct, not compliant conduct; it is something that should not be done.' He addressed the bhikṣus: 'By countless expedient means I have spoken of the Dharma of severing desire and crossing over the fetters of craving.' He also spoke of this desire as being like fire, like a torch, and even like a knife or a halberd. Having rebuked him thus, \[he said\]: 'This foolish person has manifold outflows, and has transgressed the precept for the very first time. I will now lay down the precept, assembling ten reasons: first, to gather the saṃgha; second, to make the saṃgha joyful; third, to make the saṃgha dwell in peace and bliss; fourth, to bring faith to the unbelieving; fifth, to increase the faith of those who already believe; sixth, to tame the difficult to tame; seventh, to bring peace and bliss to the conscientious; eighth, to cut off present outflows; ninth, to cut off future outflows; and tenth, so that the true Dharma may long abide.' All the precepts follow this pattern; below they are abbreviated together. One who wishes to recite the precepts should recite them thus:
