> The Buddha said: "Just as a person whose head is cut off cannot rise again, so too is the bhikṣu: one who violates this dharma no longer remains a bhikṣu; hence it is so named. If with an expedient means he wishes to perform an act of impurity: if completed, it is a pārājika; if not completed, it is a sthūlātyaya. If he instructs another bhikṣu to perform it: if the latter does so, the instructor commits a sthūlātyaya; if he does not do so, a duṣkṛta. Except for bhikṣus and bhikṣuṇīs, when the remaining assemblies instruct one another, whether performed or not, all commit a duṣkṛta. If one performs an act of impurity upon a half-decayed corpse, a wholly decayed corpse, between bones, in a hole in the ground, or in a hole in the mud, all are sthūlātyaya. If it is a tract and he perceives it as a tract, or has doubt, or perceives it as a non-tract, all are pārājika. If it is a non-tract, and he perceives it as a tract or has doubt of its being a tract, all are sthūlātyaya. For a bhikṣuṇī, it is a pārājika. For a śikṣamāṇā, a śrāmaṇera, or a śrāmaṇerī, it is a duṣkṛta and expulsion. These are what constitute offenses. As for non-offenses: if during sleep one is without awareness, receives no pleasure, and is entirely free of lustful intent. Furthermore, non-offenders are: the first perpetrator before the precept was instituted, or one who is mad, mentally disordered, or tormented by severe pain."
