The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. A householder invited the saṃgha, and the group of seventeen carried their robes, bowls, sitting mats, and needle cases to one side, walking back and forth and strolling leisurely to look around. At that time, the group of six watched for their backs to be turned, took their robes and belongings, and hid them. The bhikṣus observed and found out, and reported the fault to the Buddha, who thereupon rebuked \[them\] and laid down the precept.
