The Vinaya commentary states: "The word 'purifying' here means: if it is dyed with color, it is called 'purifying'; if it is already a purified robe of established color, one should use a different color from another material and patch it in one place as a mark, which is also called 'purifying.' From this point on, whether robes or non-robe articles, which are not everyday items, all must be dotted with a mark to be purified and kept. The word 'heavy' refers to woolen rugs and carpets, meaning the heavy items among robes."
