> First, to explain the first category, the text is divided into three parts: first, clarifying the teaching upon which it relies; second, enumerating the names and characteristics of the offences; third, concluding by investigating their observance. This is the first text. That is to say, the meaning of the offences explained under pārājika comes forth from the Prātimokṣa Sūtra recited half-month by half-month according to the Buddha's establishment. Pārājika is translated here as "defeat by another," because one is defeated by the extremely grave enemy of rule-breaking afflictions. It is also rendered as "defeat by that" in the Yogācārabhūmi.
