> Fourteenth: the precept against making a new rug in less than six years. The intention of this precept is to explain the formal resolve (adhiṣṭhāna) of keeping a rug. Texts such as the Sarvāstivāda-śāstra require all auxiliary bodily robes to be marked and formally resolved for keeping; in the Dharmaguptaka text, staying overnight separated from any robe other than the three robes constitutes a duṣkṛta—truly for this reason. If it reaches six years and is no longer fit for use, the formal resolve is lost. If, before six years, one renounces the formal resolve, making another incurs no offence. If one wishes to travel far, one's body is ill, and the robes are heavy, the Saṃgha grants a ñattidutiya-kamma permitting one to make a new one within less than six years; one takes the new one on the journey, and the old one receives the legal procedure to remain overnight separated (without guilt). When one returns from the journey and the illness is cured, one performs vikalpana on the new one and keeps the old one again; the intention lies herein. If one uses material that has undergone vikalpana to make rugs and so forth, why would six years be considered? Why would one need to renounce the old? Even if it is less than six years, it is not within the limit of the offence.
