Question: Why is the wisdom of hearing explained separately, while reflection and cultivation are discussed together? Answer: Hearing must depend on others, whereas reflection and cultivation arise from oneself; their functions differentiate into two aspects, so their separation and combination differ. This, then, briefly examines the general intent of the teachings. If the training in higher moral discipline is not established, the other two trainings have nothing on which to rely; if the seven treasures have a deficiency, the remaining six jewels are also lost. Therefore, one must first train in the treasure of moral discipline to fully prepare the merits.
