> (The Vinaya states: "The Buddha said: 'One should spread the seats, strike the gaṇḍī, and all assemble together in one place.'" The Mahīśāsaka-vinaya states: "Whatever strikes and makes a sound—wood, earthenware, bronze, or iron—have a pure person (kalpikāra) or a śrāmaṇera strike it. If there is no śrāmaṇera, a bhikṣu is also permitted. It must not exceed three rounds." The Fu fazang zhuan prescribes the method of continuous striking. The Sanqian weiyi details the number of strokes. The Sarvāstivāda-śāstra states: "When striking the gaṇḍī to assemble the saṃgha, there must be a fixed standard; it must not be altered back and forth.")
