Both the \*Mahiśāsaka-vinaya\* and the \*Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya\* permit an abbreviated recitation on account of numerous conditions. The preparatory procedures prior to the recitation are entirely the same as in the extensive rite; one recites them extensively or in brief according to the urgency of the conditions. In the \*Vinaya\* there are three or five forms of abbreviated recitation; depending on the proximity of the obstacles, the texts are not explicit.
