> (The Buddha said: "If it was done intentionally, one commits a duṣkṛta that must be confessed. Furthermore, one commits a duṣkṛta of lacking deportment. If it was not done intentionally, one only commits a duṣkṛta." The vinaya text fully clarifies the two minds of intention and mistake, stating that the two offenses are categorized separately. Many masters do not examine the Vinaya Pitaka, but solely take the five confessions as their standard, thereby blindly conforming, treating light and heavy identically, and confessing and cleansing them altogether. Moreover, when the five confessions clarify their meaning, it is only for separate occasions; regarding sthūlātyaya and pāyattika, whether they exist and how many, the established procedures are not one and the same, and the principle must be made clear. The words of ordinary people are hard to rely on, but the sacred words are easy to trust. Therefore, the Vinayamātṛkā says: "If it was done intentionally, one speaks the confession before one person; if done mistakenly, one confesses by reproaching one's own mind." This accords with the Vinaya; how could one cling to stubborn views? As in the "Tajjaniya-khandhaka" of the Vinaya, the Vibhāṣā commentary, the Sarvāstivāda, and others, each has clear evidence; it is not mere conjecture, and its meaning must be conscientiously followed. As for the rest, the derivative and root offenses differ across nine grades, all of which should be evaluated and applied by analogy as above.)
