> The procedure for appropriating in-season gifts given to the present \[saṃgha\] (The Vinaya states: From now on, one should not seek summer robes at any time during spring, summer, or winter; nor should one observe the retreat in this place and receive a share of summer robes in another place. Furthermore, there were bhikṣus who, after observing the summer rains retreat in one residence, stayed in another place, and they did not know where to take the retreat goods. The Buddha said: "I permit taking them in the place where one stayed for more days. If both places are equal, I permit taking half in each." It also states: The saṃgha received summer retreat robes, and the saṃgha split into two factions. The Buddha said: "Count the number of persons and divide. Whether they had not yet received the summer robes, or whether they had received them, or had not received them, if the saṃgha splits into two factions, count the persons and divide." For gifts to the present \[saṃgha\] such as these, there is no formal procedure for division.) The procedure for appropriating out-of-season gifts given to the present \[saṃgha\] (At that time, in Rājagṛha, the upāsakas heard that the Buddha permitted the bhikṣus to keep robes given by donors, and they immediately sent people to deliver great quantities of various fine robes to the bhikṣus. The bhikṣus did not know what to do. The Buddha said: "I permit dividing them." They did not know how to divide them. \[The Buddha said:\] Count the number of persons and divide them, ten parts for ten persons, up to a hundred parts for a hundred persons; mix fine and inferior qualities together and divide. One should not take one's own share, but have another person take it. One should not cast lots oneself, but have someone who does not see cast the lots. Since this is based on counting persons, there is likewise no formal procedure for division.)
