The eight dangers are: a king, thieves, fire, water, illness, humans, non-humans, or ferocious beasts. Other circumstances: if a great assembly has gathered but seats are scarce, or if many in the assembly are ill, it is permitted to abridge the poṣadha. If a great assembly has gathered, but the covering overhead is incomplete, or it rains, or the poṣadha extends late into the night, or there is a dispute, or a discussion of the Abhidharma or Vinaya or an exposition of the Dharma extends late into the night, it is permitted, before anyone in the assembly has risen and before the light of dawn has appeared, to perform a karman to recite the precepts; there is no other upāya by which chanda and pārisuddhi can be received overnight.
