> The Brahmajāla ordination procedure is the ritual whereby Rocana Buddha conferred the precepts upon Prince Myōhai. Śākyamuni received and recited it from Rocana, and next transmitted it to Bodhisattva Ajita, thus being passed along successively to more than twenty bodhisattvas. Transmitted by Master Kumārajīva, it comes from the Vinayapiṭaka Chapter. First, one receives the three refuges, saying: 'I, so-and-so, from this present body until the Buddha-body, in the interim, take refuge in the constantly abiding Buddha, take refuge in the constantly abiding Dharma, take refuge in the constantly abiding Saṃgha.' (Said three times.) Next, after the three conclusions (said three times), one repents the ten unwholesome karmas. (Rising again to make three prostrations.) Next, receiving with praise, and admonishing to listen attentively. (Said three times.) Directly reciting the characteristics of the ten major precepts, one is asked: 'Can you uphold them or not?' (Answering in succession, 'I can.') Thereafter, summarizing, praising, and making vows; regarding whatever else is not understood, one asks the master. (Then dispersing.) The later text states: one wishing to receive the precepts should, with incense and fire, invite one master before the Buddha to receive them. The master should ask whether one can endure the ten matters or not, such as cutting one's flesh to feed a hawk, casting one's body to a starving tigress, and so forth. (We fear only those from the nature-stage and above can manage this rule.) It also states: if within ten li there is no master, one is permitted before a Buddha image to self-vow and receive the three refuges and repentance. Reciting the ten major precepts is no different from before, the only distinction being uttering them from one's own mouth.
