> Eighth, the precept against turning one's back on the Great and heading toward the Small: this directly forbids being hesitant and unresolved, which is a preparatory stage of lower wrong views. If one is resolved—maintaining that the Great is inferior and the Small is superior—the view is completed and the precept is lost. If the wrong intention is framed in the mind but not yet finalized, one commits a minor defilement infraction, matching the prohibition of this precept. Here, turning one's back on the Great and heading toward the Small is adduced as an expression because ordinary bodhisattvas frequently do this. If it is expressed in words, there are two kinds: if it is spoken in terms of the characteristics of dharmas, the goodness of the precepts has already ceased, directly committing an inherent offense; if it is not spoken in terms of the characteristics of dharmas, it violates the tenth major precept. "And accepting and upholding the two vehicles" means wanting to accept the evil views of non-Buddhists. There are two interpretations: one says that relative to the Mahāyāna, the two vehicles are all non-Buddhist; the other says that if one turns one's back on the Mahāyāna, wanting to accept the teachings of the six masters, and the view is not yet finalized, this is a preparatory stage of wrong views and incurs a minor defilement infraction, prohibited by this precept.
