- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1812.1.23)

> Regarding the first, the preface, there are two parts: first, the verses explain Rocana's initiation; second, the prose explains Śākyamuni's exhortation and initiation. The first text also has four precepts and three exhortations. The four precepts are: first, Rocana; second, Śākyamuni; third, the bodhisattvas; fourth, sentient beings. The three exhortations are: first, exhorting reception; second, exhorting upholding; third, exhorting recitation. The obtaining of these four precepts has its origin: through fundamental transmission and receipt of prediction to attain buddhahood, one is exhorted to receive them. Having received them, one must uphold them; having upheld them, one must recite them, so that the Buddha-seed is not severed.
