- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [2.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1812.2.23)

> Nineteenth: the precept against estranging the worthy and good. Having an endowed nature that is gentle and compliant is termed 'worthy and good'; causing division between this and that is therefore termed 'estranging the good'. Reconciling disputes and settling litigations is what is proper for a bodhisattva; now, on the contrary, one creates estrangement, deceives and slanders, obstructing and abandoning correct practice; hence the sage instituted \[this precept\]. It specifically comprises four conditions: 1. it is a worthy and good \[person\]; 2. giving rise to a divisive mind of double-tongued speech; 3. carrying words back and forth; 4. the person before one understands—then one commits an offence. As for the term bhikṣu: a mendicant, one who destroys afflictions, and one who frightens Māra; from beginning to end he is called a bhikṣu.
