> Fourth: the precept against eating the five pungent roots. A bodhisattva's dwelling and bodily and vocal actions should be fragrant and pure; if they instead consume foul-smelling, defiling things, the worthy and holy will distance themselves from them; therefore, an offense is established. It specifically possesses four conditions: first, they are the five pungent roots; second, the conception that they are the five pungent roots; third, there is no circumstance of severe illness; fourth, eating them, whereupon the offense is committed. As for the text, it has two parts: first, identifying the person and listing the names, enjoining the cessation of evil; next, from "if intentionally..." onward, violating the injunction and concluding the offense. In the first text: first, garlic (popularly called hu); second, leeks (that is, jiu, xie, etc.); third, scallions (simply cong, etc.); fourth, chives (wild garlic, etc.); fifth, asafoetida (lao-xi, cao-ji). Next, concluding the offense, as in the text.
