> First, the intent of establishing \[the precept\]: giving is the foremost of the myriad practices and subsumes the six pāramitās, casting aside stinginess to accomplish generosity. It is briefly based on ten intentions, as the "Joyful Practice" in the Chapter on the Ten Practices of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra states: "This bodhisattva is a great donor, completely able to renounce all possessions, bestowing them equally upon all sentient beings with an impartial mind. Having given, there is no regret, no looking for karmic reward, no seeking fame, no seeking rebirth in superior realms, and no seeking profit." As for the ten: "1. merely wishing to rescue and protect all sentient beings; 2. wishing to gather in all sentient beings; 3. wishing to benefit all sentient beings; 4. wishing to train in the fundamental practices of all Buddhas; 5. wishing to mindfully recollect the fundamental practices of all Buddhas with a correct mind; 6. wishing to purify the fundamental practices of all Buddhas; 7. wishing to accept and uphold the fundamental practices of all Buddhas; 8. wishing to manifest the fundamental practices of all Buddhas; 9. wishing to extensively expound the fundamental practices of all Buddhas; 10. wishing to cause all sentient beings to leave suffering and attain the bliss of nirvāṇa." These are the ten. From this, one should know that in principle there is no practice in which a bodhisattva does not give.
