> First, regarding the intention of its establishment: a bodhisattva should in principle abandon the two vehicles and receive and uphold the real Dharma of the Mahāyāna; only then are they called a bodhisattva. Yet now they abandon the Great and turn to the Small, losing their correct practice, which is the utmost perversion of principle; therefore it had to be established. Thus the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: "A bodhisattva dreads the path of the two vehicles just as one who cherishes life dreads giving up their body." The "Precept Chapter" of the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra says: "If a bodhisattva were to experience the five wondrous desires for kalpas as numerous as the sands of the Gaṅgā, in terms of the bodhisattva precepts it would still not be called an offense; but if they give rise to a single thought of the two vehicles, it is immediately called an offense." Such passages are extensively expounded as in those texts.
