> As for "Each petal has ten billion lands, / Each land has one Śākyamuni": this means that among the thousand petals, each individual petal-leaf has ten billion lands of four continents. An "e" (yi) is the number koṭi. A hundred koṭi lands make a trichiliocosm. Ten hundreds make a thousand; ten thousands make a myriad; ten myriads make a lakṣa; ten lakṣas make an atilakṣa; ten atilakṣas make a koṭi. When a trichiliocosm is said to be ten billion (baiyi): a single thousand is a small thousand; a thousand small thousands make a medium thousand, and a medium thousand corresponds to an atilakṣa; a thousand medium thousands make a great thousand, and a great thousand corresponds to a hundred koṭis. However, in the new translations an "e" corresponds to a lakṣa; this is counting one hundred thousand as an "e." In the old translation treatises, an "e" corresponds to a koṭi; this is counting ten million as an "e." If, according to the Hīnayāna, one trichiliocosm has one Śākyamuni, only within this Jambudvīpa among the four continents is there an adamantine seat where the real body achieves the Way; in the other continents there is no adamantine seat and they are not places for achieving the Way—he merely dispatches transformation bodies to cross over those who can be crossed over. Now the Mahāyāna says that within a trichiliocosm there are ten billion lands, and within the ten billion lands there are in every case bodhi trees and adamantine seats, with ten billion Śākyamunis each serving as the master of conversion. The Śākyamuni of this land says: "I am the root body; the others are all my transformations." The Śākyamunis of the other lands all speak likewise. Thus, discussing the root in terms of the branches, the ten billion are mutually roots to one another; discussing the branches in terms of the root, they are all transformations of Vairocana.
