> As for "Such a thousand, ten billion": this means a thousand sets of ten billion; hence it says "a thousand, ten billion," not a paired citation of a thousand and ten billion; "a thousand, ten billion" below is explained in this way in all cases. "Have Vairocana as their root body" indicates their origin. The sūtra in the upper fascicle says: "For a hundred asaṃkhyeya kalpas I cultivated the mind ground, and taking this as the cause, I initially abandoned \[the status of\] a worldling and attained equal, correct enlightenment, named Vairocana, dwelling in the ocean of the Lotus Pedestal Treasury World. That pedestal is completely surrounded by a thousand petals; each petal is a world, making a thousand worlds; I transform into a thousand Śākyamunis occupying the thousand worlds. Furthermore, upon each petal world, there are again ten billion Mount Sumerus, ten billion suns and moons, ten billion sets of four continents, ten billion southern Jambudvīpas, and ten billion Bodhisattva Śākyamunis seated beneath ten billion bodhi trees, each expounding what you have heard: the bodhisattva mind ground. The remaining nine hundred and ninety-nine Śākyamunis each manifest ten billion Śākyamunis in the same manner. The Buddhas upon the thousand petals are my transformation bodies; the thousand \[times\] ten billion Śākyamunis are the transformation bodies of the thousand Śākyamunis; I am the root origin, named Vairocana Buddha."
