- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [2.147](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1814.2.147)

> The two precepts below clarify personal containment through precepts. Within this, the first precept clarifies containment of conduct through precepts, and the latter precept clarifies containment of teachings through precepts. Violating the pure precepts and presumptuously accepting the gifts of the faithful increases sin in oneself and diminishes merit for others; therefore it is prohibited. It is prohibited in both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna, but in the śrāvaka \[vinaya\] one does not see a separately formulated offense for receiving offerings while breaking precepts. The Great Being \[bodhisattva\] damages practices that benefit sentient beings, so a separate offense is formulated, applying specifically to the five assemblies. Because the text says 'leaving home with faithful mind', it means that following whichever fundamental offense is incurred from the transgression, the offense of receiving offerings while violating precepts is added on top. The fundamental offense incurred encompasses both light and heavy, excepting only those who lose the precepts through overwhelming entanglement. In the text, 'leaves home with faithful mind and receives the Buddha's correct precepts': because leaving home and receiving precepts bears the role of a field of merit, it refers specifically to leaving home. 'Intentionally gives rise to the thought to violate the noble precepts': the precepts instituted by the Buddha are all called noble precepts. Knowingly and intentionally acting contrary to them is called 'intentionally giving rise to the thought'; damaging the received essence is why it says 'violate'. 'Must not receive offerings from any dānapatis', and so forth: since the field of precepts has been destroyed, they ought not receive offerings. 'Five thousand great ghosts will constantly obstruct their path': because of presumptuously receiving beyond one's due, one is rebuked invisibly by non-humans. From 'All worldly people will uniformly revile them' downward: because of vainly diminishing the gifts of the faithful, one openly receives the revilement of worldly people.
