> "Disciples of the Buddha, listen attentively! These ten parājika and forty-eight minor precepts have been recited, will be recited, and are now being recited by all Buddhas of the three periods of time; I now also recite them in this way. All of you in the great assembly—kings, princes, officials, monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen who receive and uphold the bodhisattva precepts—should receive and uphold, read and recite, explain, and copy this scroll of the precepts of the permanently abiding Buddha-nature, propagating it throughout the three periods of time so that the transformation of all sentient beings continues without end. You will be able to see a thousand Buddhas, each Buddha extending a hand, and in life after life you will not fall into the evil destinies or the eight difficulties, but will constantly be born among humans and devas. Now beneath this tree, I have briefly unfolded the Dharma precepts of the seven Buddhas. All of you in the great assembly should with one mind study the prātimokṣa and joyfully practice it, as is explained in detail one by one in the 'Encouragement to Study' section of the 'Formless Deva King Chapter'." The three thousand scholars who were sitting and listening at that time, hearing the Buddha himself recite them, with every thought reverently accepted them and joyfully received and upheld them.
