> The Commentary says: This is the second: the gate of praising the power and majesty of the precepts. The precepts destroy the darkness of offenses just like the sun and moon, and adorn the practitioner like strings of jewel necklaces. As the Legacy Teaching \[Sūtra\] says: 'The clothing of shame and conscience is the foremost among all adornments.' Alternatively, it is said that natural precepts (prakṛtiśīla) are bright like the sun and moon, while prohibitory precepts (pratiṣedhaśīla) adorn like jewel necklaces, because they destroy the darkness of natural offenses and adorn natural precepts. The beginning of the myriad practices takes precepts as the foundation, and the culmination of the myriad practices takes bodhi as the fruit; therefore, the three periods of time are all accomplished through precepts, for the Buddha's three clusters \[of precepts\] correspondingly accomplish the three virtues. As the Yogācāra says: 'The provisions of merit and wisdom thus accumulated cannot be subsumed by any other fruit, excepting only unexcelled right and complete bodhi.'
