> The Commentary says: This is the second gate. All the prohibitory precepts instituted by the World-Honoured One, of both the higher vehicle and lower vehicle, emerge from this; hence it says 'the treasury of precepts within the Buddha-Dharma'. To distinguish them from the precepts born of concentration (dhyāna-saṃvara) and the precepts born of the noble path (anāsrava-saṃvara), it says 'prātimokṣa'. In Sanskrit it is 'prati', rendered here as 'separate'. In full, it should say 'vimokṣa', rendered here as 'separate liberation'. Because they liberate from wrongdoing separately, they are named 'separate liberation'. Furthermore, the Legacy Teaching says: 'Precepts are the foundation that accords with liberation; hence they are named prātimokṣa.' If one receives the bodhisattva precepts, thinking, 'By means of these precepts I shall become a Buddha, just like Śākyamuni,' because the precepts have already been accomplished, one will not give rise to any disparate mind; at that time, it is called 'the divisions of the precepts are already complete'. Wholesomely contemplating limits and demarcations is what is called precepts. As the Benye \[jing\] says: 'The precepts of all bodhisattvas, whether ordinary beings or sages, take the mind as their essence. If the mind ceases, the precepts also cease. Because the mind does not cease, the precepts also do not cease.' The mind here is the Mahāyāna mind, which cannot be attained by those who regress from the vehicle or have not yet generated the aspiration \[for bodhi\].
