> From here below is the sixth major section of the treatise, titled 'Purity of Conduct and Abiding'. Herein it clarifies that the Buddha's three karmas of conduct and abiding are all undefiled; hence it is called 'purity'. Why does this text appear? To resolve a latent doubt and complete the preceding meaning of non-abiding in saṃsāra. Ordinary beings and the two vehicles see that the Buddha's conduct and abiding in the three karmas do not differ from ordinary people; how then could he undergo birth without defilement? Next, it clarifies that the Buddha manifests distinctions in conduct and abiding, yet is without any defilement. Based on the treatise, 'abiding' is determined as three: first is called 'purity of deportment conduct and abiding', clarifying that the Buddha's physical karma manifests conduct and abiding yet is not conduct and abiding; second is called 'purity of sovereign conduct and abiding in the contemplation of name and form', clarifying that the Buddha's mental karma conducts and abides with sovereignty in the contemplation that dismantles name and form; from 'If a bodhisattva, with immeasurable...' downward is the third, called 'purity of undefiled conduct and abiding'. Herein there is undefiled teaching of the Dharma, revealing the conduct and abiding of the Buddha's verbal karma; and there is undefiled transmigration, clarifying that the Buddha's conduct and abiding are pure among all conditioned dharmas. Therefore, the treatise collectively titles it 'Purity of Conduct and Abiding'.
