> Question: What is the sequence among these benefits? Answer: Here three kinds of benefit are clarified: first, the superior benefit, which refers to initially attaining non-arising down to turning the pure Dharma-wheel; second, the middling benefit, which refers to attaining saṃbodhi in eight rebirths down to a single rebirth; third, the inferior benefit, which refers to sentient beings of eight Buddha worlds generating the bodhi-mind. When I first read this treatise, I adhered to Tianqin's statement that in eight rebirths or a single rebirth they attain saṃbodhi; initially, from attaining non-arising down to eight rebirths and a single rebirth, these were all increasing numbers proceeding from shallow to deep, and I did not know of the three grades of benefit. Having lectured on it several hundred times, I finally understood it. Question: How are eight rebirths and a single rebirth a middling benefit? Answer: Initially upon hearing the \*Lotus\*, one immediately attains non-arising, and can even turn the pure Dharma-wheel. Here, upon hearing the \*Lotus\*, one enters the first bhūmi only after undergoing rebirth eight times, down to entering the first bhūmi after undergoing rebirth once; therefore it is a middling benefit. The author of the treatise combines these three benefits to make two: the first two benefits are both called realization, because they equally attain non-arising; the latter one only begins to attain the generation of the mind, and therefore is called faith. Question: When the single "Lifespan Chapter" was spoken, why was it shown that so many people attained the Way? Answer: This recounts Śākyamuni from his initial generation of the mind to the subsequent limit, and so forth—all the transforming masters, Dharma gates, assemblies of disciples, places, and times, wherein whether phenomena or principle, whether provisional or real, none was not manifested; therefore those who attained the Way were many.
