> These two lines are called the accomplishment of the adornment of the merits of the seat. Why did the Buddha originally adorn this seat? He saw that some bodhisattvas, in their final body, spread grass and sit upon it to attain anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi; when humans and devas see this, they do not give rise to superior faith, superior reverence, superior love and joy, or superior practice. Therefore he made the vow: "When I become a Buddha, may the dais of the wondrous pure flower, king of immeasurable great jewels, be the Buddha's seat." As for "immeasurable," it is as stated in the Sūtra on Contemplation of Immeasurable Life: "Upon the ground of the seven jewels is a king of lotus thrones of great jewels. Each petal of the lotus has the colors of a hundred jewels and eighty-four thousand veins, like celestial paintings. The veins radiate eighty-four thousand rays of light. Even the smaller petals are two hundred and fifty yojanas in length and breadth. Such a flower has eighty-four thousand petals, and between each petal are a hundred billion kings of maṇi jewels serving as radiant adornments. Each maṇi emits a thousand rays of light, whose light is like a canopy composed of the seven jewels covering the entire ground. The dais is made of Śakra-abhilaṅghana jewels; this lotus dais is adorned with eighty thousand diamond kiṃśuka jewels, brahma-maṇi jewels, and nets of wondrous pearls. Spontaneously upon the dais are four jeweled banners, each banner like eighty-four thousand billion Mount Sumerus. The jeweled curtains upon the banners are like those in the palace of the Yāma Deva, having fifty billion wondrous jewels serving as radiant adornments. Each jewel has eighty-four thousand rays of light, and each ray of light produces eighty-four thousand different kinds of golden color. Each golden light pervades the jeweled land of Peace and Bliss, transforming everywhere into various distinct forms—sometimes diamond daises, sometimes pearl nets, sometimes clouds of variegated flowers—freely manifesting in the ten directions to perform Buddha-work. Matters such as these exceed all measure." Therefore it is said: "The king of immeasurable great jewels, / the wondrous and pure flower dais."
