> \[Supplementary note:\] Benefiting others is called a bodhisattva; practicing goodness alone is called a śrāvaka. Why then does taking pleasure in crowds mean receiving vexation? Answer: Master Mencius said, “The trouble with people is that they like to be masters of others.” The explanation says: when one's learning has surplus and people rely on oneself, one responds out of necessity. If one likes to be a master of others, that is how it becomes a trouble. Thus that trouble arises from liking, while the present calamity arises from taking pleasure. Otherwise, benefiting oneself and benefiting others, becoming a single large tree to provide shade and cool for the people of the world—this is called great benefit; what calamity could there be?
