> Regarding "With respect to dharmas, one obtains cessation ... past, present, and arising dharmas": this clarifies the fourfold distinction (catuṣkoṭi) regarding the acquisition of the two cessations. Because space (ākāśa) has no acquisition, it is not compared here; the reason it lacks acquisition will be clarified separately below. Namely: past, present, dharmas destined to arise, and non-arising dharmas; these each have contaminated (sāsrava) and uncontaminated (anāsrava) aspects, two times four making eight. The first alternative contains three dharmas, namely, all contaminated past, present, and arising dharmas: being contaminated, they obtain pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha; being past, present, and arising dharmas, they do not obtain apratisaṃkhyā-nirodha. The second alternative contains one dharma, namely, non-arising uncontaminated conditioned dharmas: being non-arising, they obtain apratisaṃkhyā-nirodha; being uncontaminated, they do not obtain pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha. Here "uncontaminated" excludes contaminated, and "conditioned" excludes unconditioned. The third alternative contains one dharma, namely, those non-arising contaminated dharmas: being contaminated, they obtain pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha; being non-arising, they obtain apratisaṃkhyā-nirodha. The fourth alternative contains three dharmas, namely, all uncontaminated past, present, and arising dharmas: being uncontaminated, they do not obtain pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha; being past, present, and arising dharmas, they do not obtain apratisaṃkhyā-nirodha.
