> Regarding 'Tradition says that this statement \[...\] like anointing, bathing, and the like': This is the answer. If a person suffers from cold and suddenly encounters the tangible contact of sunlight or fire's heat, it immediately brings benefit. If a person suffers from heat and gets to encounter the tangible contact of tree shade or cool wind, it immediately brings benefit. This is also called food. When speaking of material food, the masters of the \*Vibhāṣā\* hand down the tradition that this term 'eaten and drunk' is discussed based on the predominant case. Just as anointing the body with medicine, bathing, and the like, though not eaten or drunk, can sustain the body, they are also subsumed under subtle food. Although in the form realm there are tangibles that can sustain and benefit, because there is absolutely no eating or drinking by portions, it is not material food.
