> "There is what is solid but not nutriment... there are four alternatives for all" is the answer. In the first alternative, because it can be drunk or eaten, it is called solid, but because it damages the faculties and the primary elements, it is not nutriment. In the second alternative, because the other three nutriments are able to nourish, they are called nutriments, but because they are not drunk or eaten, they are not solid. In the third alternative, because it can be drunk or eaten, it is called solid, and because it benefits the faculties and the primary elements, it is called nutriment. The fourth alternative excludes the preceding characteristics. There are four alternatives for each of the three nutriments of contact and the rest. Fascicle 1 of the Saṅgītiparyāya states: "Question: Is all contact nutriment? Answer: One should make four alternatives. There is contact that is not nutriment: namely, anāsrava contact, and sāsrava contact that acts as a condition damaging the faculties and primary elements. There is nutriment that is not contact: namely, the other three nutriments. There is what is both contact and nutriment: namely, sāsrava contact that acts as a condition nourishing the faculties and primary elements. There is what is neither contact nor nutriment: namely, excluding the preceding characteristics. As with the meaning of the four alternatives for the nutriment of contact, volition and consciousness should be understood to be likewise."
