> "Not so... its nature is also not permanent" is the reply, which can be understood. Furthermore, the Mahāvibhāṣā 134 states: "Question: If the earth of the fourth dhyāna is boundless and beyond the reach of disasters, why is it not permanent? Answer: Because it is momentary and impermanent, there is no such fault. Some say: In the earth of the fourth dhyāna, the palaces and their supports are both impermanent and indeterminate; that is, the earth of those palaces arises and perishes together with the birth and death of those devas. This statement is irrational. Why is that? Because there would be no receptacle karma shared by sentient beings. Therefore, what was stated earlier is preferable." When the Mahāvibhāṣā states that the earth of the fourth dhyāna is boundless, it is spoken with reference to the accumulated extent of many distinct places, meaning the ground is boundless, not that there is a single continuous terrain. Therefore, Nyāyānusāra 21, explaining the Anabhraka heaven, states: "Because below, in empty space, the earth inhabited by devas is densely joined like clouds, it is called 'cloud.' Above this, the devas no longer have cloud-like ground; being at the head of the cloudless \[heavens\], it is called 'Cloudless'." Question: Why does this treatise agree with the non-standard view of the Mahāvibhāṣā? Explanation: The Kośa does not take the arbiters of the Mahāvibhāṣā as authoritative. Question: If so, how is the objection raised by the Mahāvibhāṣā resolved? Explanation: Before the receptacle perishes, other devas can share in its enjoyment, so it is called that which is produced by collective karma.
