> \[On the text,\] "Or, in all … because all possess momentariness": This re-refutes the Vaiśeṣika doctrine, continuing from that discussion. You, the Vaiśeṣika master, could also imagine that in all conditioned phenomena, from moment to moment, there is this dharma and adharma acting as the cause of arising and destruction. Although you posit that dharma and adharma are distinct causes for arising and destruction, you thereby concede that conditioned phenomena arise and perish moment by moment. Since they continually arise and perish, your fundamental dispute with the Sammatīya over the absence of momentary destruction ought to cease, because by conceding that \[destruction\] does not depend on extraneous causes of destruction such as fire, all possess momentariness. Another explanation: This re-refutes both attachments. Or, in all conditioned phenomena, one could imagine from moment to moment that there is this cause of destruction consisting in the nonexistence of duration, or this cause of destruction consisting in dharma and adharma. If so, the fundamental dispute over the absence of momentary destruction ought to cease, because both agree that, not depending on extraneous causes of destruction such as fire, all possess momentariness. Another explanation: This re-refutes the Sammatīya. You, the Sammatīya, could also imagine that in all conditioned phenomena, from moment to moment, there is this primary cause of destruction. If so, your dispute with the Sammatīya over the absence of momentary destruction ought to cease, because by not depending on extraneous causes of destruction such as fire, all possess momentariness.
