> "The treatise says... arises from diversity of karma" explains the first line. "A single Lord" refers to a single heavenly Lord, either the Great Brahmā King, or Maheśvara, and so forth. Various non-Buddhists hypothesize that this heavenly Lord is able to create all things; when he is about to create, he first gives rise to this awareness, desiring to enjoy the objects, and then generates all the worlds. Alternatively, Sāṃkhya non-Buddhists hypothesize a single Self as Lord, with volition as its essence; when it desires to enjoy objects, it must first give rise to the awareness, 'I now wish to enjoy objects,' and then primal nature (prakṛti) gradually transforms to produce all worlds. Alternatively, certain Vaiśeṣika non-Buddhists hypothesize the Self as the agent that gives rise to all dharmas, also preceded by awareness, after which it generates the world. Hence it is said: 'generated through the prior awareness of a single Lord.' The treatise master refutes this, saying: These worlds are not generated through the prior awareness of a single Lord; it is solely due to the diversity of sentient beings' karma that these two kinds of worldly results arise. Another explanation: Diverse results arise solely due to the karma of sentient beings. Another explanation: Diversity applies both to the karmic cause and to the resulting arising.
