俱舍論記 18.92

- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [18.92](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1821.18.92)

> "Or, the name 'meritorious action' \[...\] because one undertakes preparatory applications for merit": the second explanation. Alternatively, the name "meritorious action" expresses the meaning of creating merit, which refers to the preparatory applications (prayoga) of merit, namely the preparatory applications prior to giving, morality, and cultivation. The preparatory application is itself merit, hence called "preparatory application of merit". This preparatory application is called merit because it is wholesome, and action because it creates. Or, it is the preparatory application of merit: merit is giving, morality, and cultivation, and action is the preparatory application prior to merit, hence called the preparatory application of merit. "Basis" indicates that upon which it relies; that is, giving, morality, and cultivation are the bases upon which that meritorious action relies. In order to accomplish those three bases of giving, morality, and cultivation, one undertakes preparatory applications for merit beforehand. Another explanation: Alternatively, the name "meritorious action" expresses the meaning of creating merit, where "preparatory application for merit" indicates that which relies, while "basis" indicates that upon which it relies—namely giving, morality, and cultivation. That which relies and that upon which it relies are stated together; hence it is called "basis of meritorious action" (puṇyakriyāvastu).
