> "Toward that which has no virtue \[...\] is called false conceit"—this explains the seventh conceit. In regard to evil practices and phenomena devoid of virtue, thinking that one possesses virtue is called false conceit (mithyāmāna). Therefore the Nyāyānusāra says: "Thinking that one possesses virtue in that which is devoid of virtue is called false conceit. The phrase 'devoid of virtue' refers to evil practices; because they oppose virtue, they are designated 'devoid of virtue,' just as with the unwholesome. Toward possessing these phenomena devoid of virtue, thinking that one has these extraordinary virtues and being haughty relying on evil, is called false conceit. If one said that 'devoid of virtue' is an expression negating possessing virtue, so that thinking one possesses virtue where there is truly no virtue is called false conceit, then when distinguishing between conceit of superiority and false conceit, one would say that having no seed is conceit of superiority, while having a seed is false conceit; or that full exaggeration is conceit of superiority, while partial exaggeration is false conceit. Such distinctions would logically fail to hold; therefore, one should know that the former explanation is superior."
