> On the passage from "Namely, if someone asks" to "should be answered by counter-questioning": an answer. "Perception" refers to the perception aggregate (saṃjñā-skandha). Another explanation: "perception" refers to name; names arise from perception or are able to generate perception, so they take their name from perception and are subsumed under the aggregate of formations (saṃskāra-skandha). If someone asks: "Is the perception of a person identical with or different from the self?" one should counter-question: "Relying on what self do you ask such a question?" If they say relying on the coarse, provisional self of the five skandhas, one should answer that it is different from perception. If they rely on the distinct, real, subtle self they grasp at, one cannot say it is identical or different. Question: Perception is subsumed under the five skandhas; how can one say it is different? Explanation: Excluding the perception of a person, one posits the remaining skandhas as the self, hence one says it is different from perception. Another explanation: The self is of two kinds: first, coarse; second, subtle. If they say relying on the coarse provisional self of the form aggregate, one should answer that it is different from perception, because perception is not form. If they say relying on the subtle provisional self of the four skandhas, one should counter-question again: "Relying on which subtle self?" If they say relying on the remaining three skandhas, one should answer that it is different from perception; if they say relying on perception, one should answer that it is identical. Because the coarse self is definitely different from perception, the treatise text cites it specifically; the subtle self is indefinite, so it is omitted and not mentioned. This question is one to be answered by counter-questioning.
