> Regarding "It was previously stated that the variety of the world \[...\] lacks the capacity to actualize existence": within this chapter, there is first the explanation of the essential nature of afflictions, and second the explanation of the cessation of afflictions. Within the first, explaining the essential nature of afflictions, there is first the primary explanation of root afflictions, and second the explanation of miscellaneous afflictions. Within the primary explanation of root afflictions, there is first the analysis of the root afflictions, and second the analysis according to various categories. Within the analysis of root afflictions, there is first explaining them by increasing enumeration; second, explaining their abandonment through vision (darśana-heya) and cultivation (bhāvanā-heya); third, separately explaining the five views; fourth, incidentally explaining the four inversions (viparyāsa); fifth, explaining the seven and nine conceits (māna). Within the first, explaining by increasing enumeration, there is first explaining the six latent defilements; second, explaining the seven latent defilements; third, explaining the ten latent defilements; fourth, explaining the ninety-eight \[latent defilements\]. Below this is the first, explaining the six latent defilements. The beginning of the previous chapter stated that the variety of the world is entirely born from karma; this karma in turn only attains generation and growth through the latent defilements; karma separated from the latent defilements has no capacity to actualize the fruition of existence. This repeats the preceding to introduce what follows.
