> On the passage from "If in the future" to "can also bind the three times": explaining the next three lines. If greed, anger, and conceit associated with mental consciousness in the future universally bind the three times, whether the defilement arises or does not arise regarding this entity, as long as it is not abandoned, it can bind. Greed and anger associated with the five consciousnesses in the future, if not abandoned and capable of arising, because their objects are necessarily simultaneous, only bind the future. Thus the \*Nyāyānusāra\* says: "By this it is already revealed that latent defilements capable of arising associated with the five consciousnesses, if they reach the past, only bind the past; if they reach the present, it is likewise—the meaning can be understood by analogy. If they are latent defilements capable of arising associated with mental consciousness, if they reach the past or present and are not abandoned, they can bind dharmas that do not belong to their own time (end of treatise quotation)." Greed and anger associated with the five consciousnesses in the future, if not abandoned and not arising, because their types are manifold, can also bind the three times; since their cognitive objects may be in the future, or flow to the present, or enter the past, although that which cognizes does not arise due to lacking conditions, because they are not abandoned, their nature binds the three times.
