> Regarding "Because having abandoned the fifth … because one has not yet crossed over the realm": this is the answer. Because having abandoned the fifth grade, if one does not regress, in this very life one will certainly abandon the sixth grade, with no death and rebirth occurring in between. If one does not regress, one certainly abandons the sixth grade; it is not the case that the single sixth grade of affliction can obstruct the attainment of the fruit of Once-Returner. It is just like an ekavīcika who abandons the eighth grade and has not yet abandoned the ninth, undergoing \[rebirth as\] a single bīja. Because abandoning the ninth grade means crossing over the desire realm, that ninth grade constitutes an extreme obstacle; thus, although one has abandoned the eighth grade, one abides \[with\] the ninth and undergoes rebirth. In abandoning the fifth grade, when one wishes to abandon the sixth, because one has not yet crossed over the realm, this sixth grade does not constitute an extreme obstacle; therefore, having abandoned the fifth grade, one cannot pass through a rebirth, but will certainly abandon the sixth and attain the fruit of Once-Returner. An ancient master said: "If one abandons the fifth grade, one will not even emerge from contemplation, but will additionally abandon the sixth." This explanation is incorrect; it contradicts the \*Vibhāṣā\*, as fully cited above.
