> \[The phrase\] "Conventional cognition was previously \[...\] because the lineages are manifold" presents the answer. Because conventional cognition has repeatedly known, abandoned, and realized among the three truths, it is cultivated at the border of direct realization. As it has never had an actualized direct realization with respect to the path, it is not called cultivation. Because the path is not a single enterprise, at the subsequent cognition of the path one does not cultivate conventional \[cognition\]. Furthermore, there is definitely no exhaustive direct realization of the enterprise with respect to the path. That is to say, with respect to the three truths of suffering, origination, and cessation in the three realms, one can exhaustively know suffering, exhaustively abandon origination, and exhaustively realize cessation; therefore at the border of direct realization one can cultivate conventional cognition. But there is definitely no possibility of exhaustively cultivating the path; therefore at the border of direct realization one does not cultivate conventional cognition. Although at the border of the truth of origination one has not yet abandoned all origination without remainder, at the actual stage of origination the abandonment of origination has already been completed; although at the border of the truth of cessation one has not yet realized all cessation without remainder, at the actual stage of cessation the realization of cessation has already been completed. The path is not so: because the lineages are manifold, one cannot cultivate the paths of different lineages; and even though acquisition and cultivation are admissible within one's own faculties and lineage, one does not arouse even one out of a hundred thousand parts. At the border of the direct realization of suffering, suffering is definitely exhaustively known; hence it is not separately explained.
