> \[On the text from\] "The correct view is" down to "it is 'transcending' because of forever crossing beyond": this is the orthodox position. The correct view is that in reality there are also sixteen. In total there are four rounds of explanations of the sixteen aspects, and this is the first round. The truth of suffering has four aspects: because it arises depending on multiple conditions, it is 'impermanent'; because its nature is flux and oppression, it is 'suffering'; because it contradicts the view of what belongs to self, it is 'empty'; because it contradicts the view of self, it is 'non-self.' The truth of origin has four aspects: by analogy to the principle of a seed producing a sprout, it is 'cause'; by the principle of equally manifesting results, it is 'origin'; by the principle of causing results to continue, it is 'production'; by the principle of bringing results to completion, it is 'condition.' The analogies can be understood. The truth of cessation has four aspects: because all polluted skandhas are severed and exhausted, it is 'cessation'; because the three fires of greed, hostility, and delusion are extinguished, it is 'calm'; because its essence is free from all afflictions, it is 'excellent'; because it is liberated from all calamities and misfortunes, it is 'deliverance.' The truth of the path has four aspects: in the sense of traversing the practice of all noble ones, it is 'path'; because it accords with correct principle, it is 'correct'; because it points correctly toward nirvāṇa, it is 'practice'; because it can forever transcend birth and death, it is 'transcending.'
