> "First, one group \[...\] because they arise \[from detachment\]": there are two masters' explanations; below is the explanation of the first master. This clarifies that the first defiled \[dhyāna\] lacks the factors of joy and pleasure, and possesses the factors of vitarka, vicāra, and samādhi. Thus the Nyāyānusāra, fascicle 78, says: "First, one group speaks according to the characteristics, saying: in the first defiled \[dhyāna\] there are no joy and pleasure born of detachment, because they are not able to arise through detachment from defilements. Although defiled samādhi is also associated with joy, it is not born from detachment and therefore is not subsumed under the factors. This not only speaks of joy born of detachment from desire, but also speaks of arising from detachment from the defilements of its own stage. For in the sūtra it is first said: 'Having detached from desires and bad, unwholesome dharmas...' and then it further says: '...joy and pleasure born of detachment.' The repetition of the words 'born of detachment' here is to show that there is also joy arising from detachment from the afflictions of its own stage. To show that the joy factor is solely wholesome in nature, the Bhagavān explains it together with pleasure. Because association with prasrabdhi must be wholesome in nature, defiled samādhi definitely lacks the joy factor; therefore the factors of the first defiled \[dhyāna\] are only three (end of śāstra passage)."
