> "The commentary states: '... and two of its own stage'" explains the preceding two lines. An anāsrava absorption sequentially produces wholesome \[states\] of its own stage, of higher stages, and of lower stages. The word "wholesome" comprehensively subsumes both the pure (śuddha) and the anāsrava. Because they are diametrically opposed, it never produces defiled \[states\]. However, both upward and downward it reaches at most to the third \[stage\]; because of the distance, none can leap to the fourth. Therefore, among the seven anāsrava absorptions—the four dhyānas and the \[lower\] three formless \[absorptions\]—immediately after the first dhyāna, six are produced: namely, the pure and the anāsrava of its own stage, of the second stage, and of the third stage. Immediately after the sphere of nothingness, seven are produced: namely, two of its own stage and four of the lower stages, making six, plus only the pure of the higher stage, totaling seven kinds. Immediately after the second dhyāna, eight are produced: namely, two of its own stage and four of the higher stages, making six, plus two of the lower stage, totaling eight. Immediately after the sphere of boundless consciousness, nine are produced: namely, two of its own stage and four of the lower stages, making six, plus three of the higher stages (namely, two of the sphere of nothingness and one of neither-perception-nor-non-perception), totaling nine. Immediately after each of the third dhyāna, the fourth dhyāna, and the sphere of boundless space, ten are produced: namely, four of the higher stages and four of the lower stages, making eight, plus two of their own stage, totaling ten.
