> Regarding 'Belonging to the fundamental stages ... must take the lower as object': this explains the lower two lines. Wholesome immaterial absorptions subsumed under the fundamental stages do not take lower contaminated dharmas as object, because they have already been reviled and abandoned, and because the concentration is narrow and inferior. As reasoned, one should know that, according to what is appropriate, there is nothing among lower uncontaminated dharmas, self, and all higher contaminated and uncontaminated dharmas that they cannot take as object. Although they can also take lower uncontaminated dharmas as object, they take the path belonging to category-knowledge as object, not the path belonging to dharma-knowledge. Therefore the \*Nyāyānusāra\* says: 'Because it can only take as object what completely counteracts itself. Dharma\[-knowledge\] is not a complete antidote, as was previously explained. Furthermore, although the path of the category of dharma\[-knowledge\] acts as an antidote for the immaterial realm, it is a guest and not the host; since it cannot take lower contaminated dharmas as object, it also cannot take the analytical cessations or non-analytical cessations of lower contaminated dharmas as object.' Question: Since it takes the path belonging to lower category-knowledge as object, does it also take the non-analytical cessation of that path as object? Explanation: It also takes the non-analytical cessation of the lower path of category-knowledge as object. Thus fascicle 10 of the \*Vibhāṣā\*, explaining the aspect of non-self, says: 'The four immaterial stages also have this aspect, yet they cannot take all dharmas as object. Namely, the aspect of non-self in the stage of boundless space takes as object all paths of category-knowledge of the four immaterial \[realms\] as their causes and their cessations, and the non-analytical cessations of the four immaterial \[realms\], the non-analytical cessations of all paths of category-knowledge, and all unconditioned space; whether one intends these to be one entity or multiple entities, this aspect completely takes them as object. Thus it continues up to: the aspect of non-self in the stage of neither-perception-nor-non-perception takes as object all paths of category-knowledge of the stage of neither-perception-nor-non-perception as its cause and its cessation, and the non-analytical cessation of the stage of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, the non-analytical cessations of all paths of category-knowledge, and all unconditioned space; whether one intends these to be one entity or multiple entities, this aspect completely takes them as object.' This represents the view of the evaluators in the \*Vibhāṣā\*. By analogy with this, one knows that the four immaterial absorptions also take as object the non-analytical cessation of the lower path of category-knowledge. The threshold stages of the immaterial \[realms\] also take lower \[stages\] as object, because their uninterrupted paths must take lower \[stages\] as object.
