> "Of the eight, the first three... serve as cognitive objects": this explains the third verse, elucidating the objects cognized by the deliverances. Of the eight, the first three take only the visible matter āyatana of the desire realm as their object. The distinction among them is: two objects are repulsive, because they cognize impurity; one object is delightful, because it cognizes pure matter. Question: The matter of the form realm is pure, whereas one contemplates the desire \[realm\] as impure; how can one abandon craving for the matter of the form realm? The explanation is: this does not directly eradicate it, but causes one to temporarily distance oneself from it. The next four formless deliverances each take as their cognitive objects their own and the higher truths of suffering, origin, and cessation, the path of the category-cognition class belonging to all stages, the non-analytical cessations of the suffering and origin of their own and the higher stages, the non-analytical cessations of that path of the category-cognition class of all \[stages\], as well as space. Furthermore, the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 84, says: "As for the objects: the first three deliverances take the visible matter āyatana of the desire realm as their object; the fourth deliverance takes the four formless \[attainments\], their causes, and their cessations—all classes of category-cognition—and the non-analytical cessations of the four formless \[attainments\] and classes of category-cognition, along with space, whether conceived as one entity or as many entities, all of them, as its cognitive object. (The fifth and sixth deliverances are understood accordingly by analogy.) The seventh deliverance takes the station of neither perception nor non-perception, its causes, its cessations, all classes of category-cognition, the station of neither perception nor non-perception, the non-analytical cessations of the classes of category-cognition, along with space, whether conceived as one entity or as many entities, all of them, as its cognitive object. The deliverance of the cessation of perception and feeling has no cognitive object. There are some who say: the deliverance of the station of infinite space also takes the non-analytical cessation of the fourth dhyāna as its object, and the remaining objects are as previously stated; up to the deliverance of the station of neither perception nor non-perception, which also takes the non-analytical cessation of the station of nothingness as its object, and the remaining objects are as previously stated. (According to those two explanations in the Mahāvibhāṣā, both allow that they take the non-analytical cessation of the lower \[stages\] as object)."
